App Trail 12

Passing through "Fat Man's Squeeze" in VirginiaThere are few things in life as amazing as the wilderness.  Ever since I was young, I've had a fascination with the wild, the animals in it, and the expanse of mountains to explore.  I have a never ending thirst to see what is at the top of the next hill or hidden deep in the valley below.  The main purpose of this site is to document my many adventures along the Appalachian Trail (AT) as I gradually work my way toward Maine.  Secondarily, I am also recording many other wonderful adventures.  The AT is a "footpath" which is by no means a walk in the park.  The entire length of the trail is over 2,100 miles and much of the terrain is considered strenuous.  In June of 2006, I started on my way with Brian Childers at my side from the Visitor Center at Amicalola Falls State Park in Georgia; the beginning of the approach trail to the Southern Terminus of the AT.  After each trip to the trail I will update this website with the details.  I plan to finish the entire trail over the course of my life, God willing.  The white blaze is the mark of the AT.  It is this blaze that I follow without a choice until I have seen each and every mile they have to offer.

Current Progress:

  • 230.2 AT miles completed (about 11% of the AT)
  • 8.8 mile approach trail completed
  • 19 days of trail time (approximate based on full, partial, and nero days)
  • 15.7 miles per day pace (average based on 14 full hiking days)
  • Next planned trip - Summer '08 - Clingman's Dome to Hot Springs, NC (75 miles)
